From Jervis Bay to WA — Franchisee Stories
National 2-week documentary shoot across Australia
ANZ's Mobile Lending franchise had a tonne of written content explaining the nitty gritty of the franchise proposition. So we wanted to direct the docuseries towards what moving image is good at — conveying emotion. Leave the key messages to the brochure.
The Approach
While there was an overarching consideration towards ANZ's strategic messaging, we focussed on allowing each person to show the real reason they do what they do. We made sure they spoke about what was real to them, rather than what they thought head office wanted to hear. Instead of asking overly constructed questions resulting in generic responses, we focussed on their real motivations. And it worked. Each story comes across natural and relatable.
Pure Documentary Shooting
Our shooting approach was pure documentary. Each subject remained mic'd up during the shoot — we conducted impromptu interviews in multiple settings, or in transit to locations. This approach takes time, and more crew, but ultimately yields a more authentic result.
As the stories weren't intended to be dramatised, we stuck with natural lighting, which made setup easier and made subjects feel less intimidated. Using lightweight camera equipment was also essential, to make sure we were always ready to roll, and that over a national 2-week shoot, we didn't collapse during production.
The Stories
Terry — filmed on location capturing the day-to-day reality of running a mobile lending franchise, the flexibility it offers, and what genuinely motivates him to keep going.
Sallie — an honest portrait of what drew her to the franchise model and how it fits around her life, told in her own words without corporate scripting.
Elise — from initial interest to building her own business, Elise's story shows the human side of franchising that brochures can't convey.
Why It Works
Conveying people as sincere and relatable is the hardest part of corporate content. By spending time with each franchisee — following them through their real environments, letting conversations flow naturally — we captured moments that feel genuine rather than staged.
Potential franchisees watching these films don't see a sales pitch. They see real people who share their values and motivations, making them excited to explore the opportunity themselves.
